A PIECE OF PARADISE SURROUNDING SKAKLIA WATERFALL

This is one of the most romantic mountain paths in Bulgaria, starting from a very beautiful and remote village, “Gara Bov”, and located only one hour away from Sofia, in the picturesque Iskar ravine.

We are in Stara Planina (the “old mountain”, called the Balkan Mountain) that divides Bulgaria in two, running from the Serbian border to the Black Sea.

The Balkan Mountains are significant for their rich history since the foundation of Bulgaria, as a natural fortress that has been seeing numerous battles against the byzantine and the ottoman empires.

Inspired by the beauty of this region, the most famous and beloved Bulgarian poet and writer Ivan Vazov stayed and worked there in the beginning of the 20th century. He wrote in this area one of his masterpieces, the story of Grandpa Yotso (Дядо Йоцо гледа).

A beautiful trail starts from the village to pass at the foot of Bovska Skaklia waterfall, declared landmark in 1978, and reach Zesele village, offering breathtaking panoramic views.

Skaklia is one of the highest waterfalls in Bulgaria the water drops from a height of more than 120 meters (3 falls, the highest is 85 meters). During the winter, the waterfall freezes and turns into one of Bulgaria’s most popular ice climbing destinations.

The romance continues on the way down, with the waterfall watching us, and the chance to encounter some orchid species, such as Orchis Morio and Orchis Tridentata.

All along the trail we enjoy panoramic views to the waterfall and the surrounding mountains, valleys and villages, covered with the green carpet of our beautiful nature.
